A post-graduate degree obtained in the United States is supposed to ensure a bright career for the students. Going abroad to do a course has been and still is, a popular and fascinating prospect. United States, for so many decades, has always been the single largest country that has been attracting students from all parts of the world, including our India, for its varied courses. Apart from the U.S., other countries that have been attracting large chunk of our students are the United Kingdom, Australia and Singapore. Facts state that we have surpassed China, in the number of students sent to the U.S., and now there are more than 80,000 Indian students studying in the United States. Now comes the million-dollar question. Why this fancy for studying abroad? Is it because our country lacks in opportunities or we do not have institutions of good standard?Prospects Abroad According to many students who are pursuing higher studies abroad, say that it helps in adding weight to their resume and it becomes easy for one to get a good career by such abroad studies. One can quote many reasons like non-availability of certain courses in some disciplines, due to limited choices in India or for social prestige. And for some students, it is an “in-thing” to go abroad for higher studies. This is more so because of the common attitude of most students, that foreign is better than our India and local degrees are not up to the mark. In chennai, now with the boom in the Information Technology, communication, manufacturing and automobile industries, we are witnessing major collaborations and international mergers. These multinational companies, prefer such abroad-educated people, who have got additional exposure to other cultures and with their multi-lingual ability. They are much preferred in the global job market and thus, studying abroad is the best way to gain good jobs, not only in a foreign country but in India too. Some feel that the education system here is different with their mark-based ranking system and also that coaching is not up to the standard. Experts say that the American education system is completely different with their approach of making students develop their own thinking, by understanding the concept well, rather than memorizing and stresses the students to work independently. For example, if you take the case of lecturers who are teaching MCA courses in our colleges in chennai, mostly they are also fresh MCA graduates or who passed out of the same college, just a year or two back. This is a fact and looking at the ‘Situations Vacant’ column in any newspaper can prove the point. So, in such cases how can they be expected to provide the students with more practical knowledge without any adequate experience? Students feel that the emphasis here is on memorization than for practical applications. Now, this seems to be a valid point in the favor of those students preferring to study abroad. Reality Check First and the foremost, the financial aspect of such abroad studies need to be taken in to consideration very seriously. For us, foreign exchange is indeed very precious and one needs do to some good math before dreaming about going abroad with the help of loans or other financial aids. Realistically speaking, education in the United States is going to be an expensive proposition, what with the tuition fees, travel and stay rounding up to tens of thousands of dollars. Of course, if at all we get high-paid hot jobs in US, and then it may tally with our investment. But do everyone, who go to the US, land up in such dream jobs? Come on guys, its not at all practically possible. So, what happens to one who did their MBA or MS in the so-called low-ranked, a third or fourth-tier university? Just calculate for yourself, how long it will take to repay those dollars, taken as loans. Of course, it is very much true that a world-class education with a good university will be your passport to a very bright future, with guaranteed earnings and growth that will stay with you all through your life. Well-qualified specialists have got tremendous opportunities over there and some high-end disciplines like bio-informatics, embedded systems or artificial intelligence requires highly qualified professionals. Well, Chennai has got lot of good institutes and consultancies for guiding people through GRE, GMAT or TOEFL and counselors also recommend appropriate educational programs too. For all these reasons, we find more and more of our chennai students preferring to study abroad and we are proving to be world citizens. |
